How To Create A Vision For The Life You Want
Do you have a vision for your life? Have you written it down?
Creating a vision for your life may seem like a waste of time but it’s not. Creating a compelling vision of the life you want is actually one of the most effective strategies for achieving the life of your dreams.
In the Bible, Proverbs 29:18 says “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
God even instructs Habakkuk to write the vision and engrave it so plainly on tablets that everyone who passed could read it easily. Writing the vision, and placing it where you can routinely see it, will help create the plan inside of you.
Why You Need A Vision
With a vision in mind, you are more likely to succeed far beyond what you could otherwise achieve without a clear vision. This applies to both your personal and professional dreams.
The fact of the matter is that if you don’t develop your own vision, you’ll allow other people and circumstances to direct the course of your life.
How To Create Your Life Vision
A clear vision isn’t necessarily developed overnight. It takes time and your best vision develops from your dreams, hopes, and aspirations. It will resonate with your values and ideals, and will generate energy and enthusiasm to help strengthen your commitment to explore the possibilities of your life.
What Do You Really Want?
Consider every aspect of your life, personal and professional, tangible and intangible. Contemplate all the important areas, family and friends, career and success, health and quality of life, spiritual connection and personal growth, and don’t forget about fun and enjoyment.
Here are a few tips to help you get started on creating your vision.
- Ask yourself WHY you want certain things
- Think about what you want and don’t focus on what you don’t want.
- Give yourself permission to dream.
- Be creative with the ideas that you never thought possible.
- Focus on YOUR wishes and not what others wish for you or expect of you
- What would bring more joy and happiness into your life?
- What do you want your relationships to be like?
- What qualities would you like to develop?
- What are your values?
- What issues do you care about?
- What are your talents?
- What’s special about you?
- What would you most like to accomplish?
As you are asking yourself these questions, be sure to write them down.
What Would Your Dream Life Look Like?
*What time would you get up?
*What would you have for breakfast?
*How will you feel about yourself?
*What kind of people are in your life? How do you feel about them?
*What does your ideal day look like?
*Where do you live? House? Condo? On the beach?
*Who is with you?
*How are you dressed?
*What’s your state of mind? Happy or sad? Contented or frustrated?
*What does your physical body look like? How do you feel about that?
*Does your best life make you smile and make your heart sing? If not, you need to dream bigger.
It’s important to make a list of the categories of things that matter to you and have a vision for each category.
Here are some category examples:
Health — exercise, diet, mindfulness
Ability — skills, knowledge, character, talents
Relationships — curate and cultivate them
Time — use your time wisely
Spiritual – inner part of yourself
Wealth — creating the value necessary to support goals
Personal Development – What am I going to do to grow myself?”
Experiences – both good and not so good. We learn from our experiences.
Accomplishments -what have you achieved
Contentment — being happy with who you are.
You can add to this list because it’s all about what matters to you, and what you want out of your life.
Next, for each of your categories, write down what you want or need from each. Think about the things you want to accomplish or experience, and work backwards to understand how the other categories should support your life’s vision.
Finally, craft a statement that describes what your ideal life looks like.
Your vision statement will consist of an overall description of your ideal life, combined with a list of areas that matter most, and high-level goals for each area.
Review your vision and goals regularly, and update your action plan for accomplishing those goals.
