6 Needs That Must Be Met
It has been a while since I have written an article regarding personal development and today I decided other information could wait for a while because I feel personal development/self-improvement is important.
I think I need to change my header/banner to promote personal development.
In fact, some of you may not know this but Empower Network is actually about personal development, self-improvement, and building leaders. One of our products, Inner Circle, is inspirational and motivational audios from leaders who want to help others achieve success.
Today, I was watching a Tony Robbins video “Unleash The Power Within Seminar” and he pointed out 6 basic needs that must be met. He pointed out that we may have different desires and goals but we all have the same 6 needs that need to be met.
6 Basic Needs We All Share
1. Certainty– is a survival mechanism. We have to have a basic level of certainty. People get certainty different ways. The question is “Is the way you are getting certainty empowering you, disempowering you or is it neutral?” This need is built into the nervous system
2. Uncertainty-Variety – We all need a variety in life. We need surprises, excitement, and uncertainty. We need variety to make us grow. Certainty and uncertainty are a paradox. Even though they may seen opposite, we need both to make a grow.
3. Significance – We need to feel significant, unique, have a purpose. We need to know that our life has a meaning. There are two ways to go about this. We can tear someone else down or we can better ourselves. If we choose to have the biggest building in town, we can either choose to tear everyone else’s building down or we can choose to build a bigger building. To be significant we need to find our own way.
4. Love and Connection – We need to be loved and have a connection. Feeling connected can be done in many ways. This can be done by being loved and loving, having faith, getting attention, being in nature, being around something that inspires you. We need a strong feeling of closeness of union with someone or something.
5. Growth- You MUST grow. If you don’t feel like you are growing you are dying inside. Our growth should be an expansion of capacity, capability or understanding.
6. Contribute – You must contribute beyond yourself in a certain way. Having a sense of service and focus on helping, giving to and supporting others will help fulfill this need. All dysfunctional behaviors come from the inability to consistently meet these needs. When our attempts to reach fulfillment fail, we will settle for comfort or for meeting our needs on a small scale.
Understanding these needs, and which one you are trying to meet in any given moment, can help you create new patterns that lead to lasting fulfillment.
My personal note on the very first need of “certainty” reminds of “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles. Throughout the book he refers to “thinking in a certain way”. In this book I feel that Wattles to using the word ‘certain’ to refer to without doubt. Even though Robbins uses the word as a ‘need’ I think both are pointing out that we need to feel certainty….whether it is how we think or how we feel about ourselves.
