"The Five Major Pieces To The Life Puzzle" by Jim Rohn

This morning I was listening to Jim Rohn ((September 17, 1930 – December 5, 2009) and as always I received so much value and inspiring wisdom from him I wanted to share a small part of it with you.

The audio I was listening to was “Best Life Ever” but he reviewed what he considered the “Five Major Pieces To The Life Puzzle”.

Those five pieces of information is what I want to share here.

The key components to success – philosophy, attitude, activity, results and lifestyle.

1.  Philosophy –   Each person’s philsophy is the first and foremost determiner of where life takes you. Philosophy is like the set of the sail. Our philosophy sets the course for where we want to go. The wind may take us to unwanted destinations. But our core philosophy of what life means to us in every situation will be the primary factor of what life turns out for us.

You don’t need a better economy…you need a better sail.

2.  Attitude – Attitude is how you feel. If philosophy sets the course of your life, your attitude is how you feel about your life. Attitude is the emotional side of life. Our emotional state governs most of our daily decisions, demeanor, and conduct. The wrong attitude  cancause you to freeze and feel paralyzed. Or your attitude can inspire you to take immediate action at any time.

Our attitude has a big influence how we live. How we evaluate our past, present and future is a big determining factor in our attitude.  If we have a negative picture about our past then it is likely that we see our present and future also on the negative side. On the flip side, when we have good memories of the past then it is in all likelihood that we expect good things in our future. The key thing is to design a better future.  We have to get clear about what we want in the future.  Surrounding yourself with the right people who want the same things you do will help lead you in the right direction.

3.  Activity “The Parable Of The Talents.”

A master had three servants and gave them each a number of talents, just before he was to leave for a while. One servant had five, one two, and another one. He urged the servants to look after their talents while he was gone.

The master was gone and the servant with five talents took them and turned them into ten. The second servant took his two and turned them into four. The third servant, being very cautious, took his and buried it in the ground to stay safe.

When the master returned, the first servant explained how he had turned five talents into ten. The master said, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.” The second told the master of how he turned two into four. The master said, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.” The third servant spoke of how he was afraid he might lost the talent and so he buried it in the earth.

The master lost his cool, and told the servant to take the single unused talents and give it to the one who now has ten.

Whatever life has handed us, whether it’s a lot or a little, it is
our responsibility to do something with what we have been given.

That is how we change pennies into fortunes and obstacles into
opportunity—by taking all that we have and all that we are and
putting it to work.

Sooner or later we must convert knowledge and good feelings
i
nto activity. The more we start with, the more we will receive
for our disciplined work. The “more” being a sound personal
philosophy and right attitude. The more we know and the better
we feel about ourselves and our opportunities, the greater our
chances for success will be.

4.  Results – Occassionally we have to  take a measure of results. You can’t let too much time pass without measuring results. Results are the measure of our harvest. If we each think of the activity we put forth as a farm in the fields, then the crops are what we get back from the work we do.

Results are always in direct proportion to effort. Those who relax in the spring do not reap in the fall, even if they absolutely need it. One of Jim’s great saying is this, “You not only sow what you reap, but you also reap what you sow.”

“We attract what we have by the type of person we are.” Success is something to be attracted and not pursued.

One of the challenges of life is to make measurable progress in reasonable time. If we find that we are not making progress, then effort must be intensified. More focus must be introduced. More skills must be acquired. More vision and planning must be adopted. If progress still eludes us, then perhaps the goal is too small and needs to be broadened.

5.  Lifestyle The final piece of the life puzzle. Jim Rohn says lifestyle is the way in which one wants to live their life. It is how we choose to live and design our lives. Lifestyle is not an amount of money. Lifestyle is the degree to which we respond to and appreciate life. Anyone can enjoy a sunset. Anyone can appreciate fine art. Anyone can admire a professional doing great work. We don’t have to be rich to live richly.

He makes the point that you do not need to be rich or powerful to enjoy life and live with a touch of class. He gives good examples of this and how to enjoy life without the need for conspicuous consumption.

Lifestyle is the culmination of the first your pieces of the five pieces of the life puzzle. It is how we experience life. It is how we choose to affect others with our words and deeds. It is the consideration we give to ourselves and others in making life something truly unique and worth living.
