Psycho-Cybernetics and Success
I recently started reading “The New Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz and if you haven’t read this book I would highly recommend it.
In case you are not familiar with Dr. Maltz or his work, the late Dr. Maxwell Maltz received his post-graduate work in plastic surgery in Europe and he headed several departments of reparative surgery in New York hospitals.
The original ideas that formed the basis of Pyscho-Cybernetics grew out of ideas he developed in his very successful private practice in New York, where he treated patients from all over the world.
Even though I am not going to do a complete synopsis of the entire book, I do want to share with you the acronym he used for SUCCESS along with a very brief description that represents each letter in the word.
Sense of direction
Understanding
Courage
Charity (compassion)
Esteem
Self-Confidence
Self-Acceptance
Sense of direction – “We are engineered as goal-seeking mechanisms. We are built to conquer environment, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction or happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve.”
Understanding – “Understanding depends on good communication. Communication is vital to any guidance system or computer. You cannot react appropriately if the information you act on is faulty or misunderstood. Most of our failures in human relations are due to misunderstandings.”
Courage – ” Nothing in this world is ever absolutely certain or guarantees. Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one’s better abilities nor ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on ideas, to take a calculated risk, and to act. Everyday living requires courage.”
Charity – “The prescription for charity is 3-fold: (1) Try to devlop a genuine appreciation for people by realizing the truth about them; they are children of God, unique personalities, creative beings. (2) Take the trouble to stop and thing of the other person’s feelings, viewpoints, desires, and needs. Think more of what the other fellow wants, and how he must feel. (3) Act as if other people are important and treat them accordingly.”
Esteem – “Stop carrying around a mental picture of yourself as a person less capable that other, by making unfair apples-to-oranges comparison. Celebrate your victories small or large, recognize and build on your strengths, and continually remind yourself that you are not your mistakes.”
Self-Confidence – “Confidence is built on an experience of success. Another important technique is to form the habit of remembering past successes and forgetting failures. Use errors and mistakes as a way to learning; then dismiss them from your mind. Deliberately, remember and picture yourself past successes. Everyone as succeeded sometime at something. Especially when beginning a new task, call up the feelings you experience in some past success, however small it might have been.”
Self-Acceptance – “Self-acceptance means accepting and coming to terms with ourselves now, just as we are, with all our faults, weaknesses, shortcomings, errors, as well as out assets and strengths. Accept yourself as you are and start from there. Learn to emotionally tolerate imperfection in yourself. It is necessary to intellectually recognize our shortcomings.”
