Online Blackout Day – Monday
Although I’m not sure this will happen, according to ABC Technology Review, there is talk about April 22 Online Blackout in CISPA Protest.
No sooner had the House of Representatives passed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), on Thursday, than word began spreading of an online protest. Some are suggesting the protest take the form of a “blackout” – going offline for 24 hours, displaying censorship bars over content or posting statements of opposition to Internet censorship — similar to last year’s opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA).
Supporters on Twitter have begun tweeting the hashtag #CISPABlackout to promote the proposed April 22 “blackout.
It happened last year on January 18, 2012. The article from Huffington Posts states:
Thousands of websites, including some of the most popular, are going dark today to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act, a bill which is designed to thwart copyright infringement but that Web experts warn could threaten the functionality of the Internet.
Encyclopedia giant Wikipedia, popular news-sharing site reddit, browser pioneer Mozilla, photo-sharing favorite Twitpic and even ICanHazCheezburger.com are blocking access to content throughout Wednesday, symbolizing what the bill may allow content creators to do to sites they accuse of copyright infringement. Other websites, including Google, are expressing solidarity with the protests by featuring anti-SOPA content on home pages (Click here for the rest of the article)
Just curious as to what we can expect this year.

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which passed the House of Representatives this week, has drawn a lot of criticism from activist groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation for potentially undermining users’ online privacy. In particular, the EFF has said that the bill gives Internet companies the right “to monitor user actions and share data – including potentially sensitive user data – with the government without a warrant” and also “overrides existing privacy law, and grants broad immunities to participating companies.”
Hacker collective Anonymous this week called for a massive online protest against CISPA to occur on April 22nd through an “Internet Blackout Day” by asking “web developers and website owners to go dark” and to also “display a message as to why you are going dark, and encourage others to do the same.” The group’s call for an online blackout day echoes a similar protest that occurred last year against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in which Reddit and Wikipedia both went dark to protest the bill while Google blacked out its famous Google doodle to symbolize its opposition.
