Apple iTunes Celebrates 10 Years

This week begins the celebration of 10 years of Apple iTunes which officially launched April 28, 2003 and had approximately 200,000 songs in the store.
During this celebration, Apple iTunes store is initiating a new feature called “A Decade of iTunes”. This will allow users to move their way through the “ages” to see the way the store looked at different points in time. Also available in Apple iTunes will be some images of the products that were successful during those years.

The music store changed how we absorb music view entertainment. It dominates the digital video market, capturing 67 percent of the TV show sale market and 65 percent of the movie sale market, according to information company NPD group and it music’s biggest retailer. Its apps are also profitable and Apple iTunes has expanded to books and magazines, and it is now available in 119 countries.
According to Scott Borchetta,
“They revolutionized the retail landscape by making a truly interactive and very user-friendly space and platform, and they managed to do it by keeping a great music experience attached to what was very difficult technology,” said Scott Borchetta, head of Big Machine Records, home to Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts. “They made it very easy to buy music digitally, and that’s why I think they’ve run so quickly in the lead for that space and continue to dominate the space.”
As Apple iTunes celebrates its 10-year milestone, there are still questions on if it can continue to dominate in the next decade. Apple iTunes is facing competition from subscription services like Spotify and along with other businesses like Amazon.com, Netflix, Hulu. It may need to reinvent itself in order to stay atop of the digital entertainment industry.
