Baseball Fever – Catch It!

Being the Cardinal Fan that I am, I decided to post a few tidbits about the Cardinals and cardinalsbaseball in general in hopes to get some response. I know that many of you are fans of other teams and I think that is great too.

With 11 World Series championships, the Cardinals have more championships than any other National League team being only second to the New York Yankees. They won the championships in 1926, 1931, 1934, 1942, 1944, 1946, 1964, 1967, 1982, 2006, 2011

Highlights of 2011 World Series

In looking back over Cardinal history, Stan the Man is many times considered the greatest Cardinal of all time. However, after that, there are varying opinions as to who ranked next after him. Some opinions are based on performance while other opinions are based fans. I guess the difference would be who is/was the greatest or who is/was the most popular.

This is one list I found of the greatest players in the history of Cardinal Baseball:

Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby, Ozzie Smith, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Albert Pujols, Mark McGwire, Joe Medwick, Enos Slaughter, Red Schoendienst, Steve Carlton, Bruce Sutter, Roger Maris, Ken Boyer, Dizzy Dean, Frank Frisch, Johnny Mize, Willie McGee are all included in the top list for Cardinal players. Other articles have also added Bob Forsch, Jim Edmonds, Keith Hernandez to the list.

In the eyes of many Cardinal fans “The Wizard of Oz” Ozzie Smith is considered #1.

Disappointed that my all time favorite Cardinal player, Darrell Porter, was not on this list.200px-Darrellporter1988
Remember him? In 1982 he was named MVP when the Cardinals won the World Series. Bruce Sutter got the save. George Brett was quoted saying “Darrell always played like it was the seventh game of the World Series”. Sorry to say that he passed away in 2002 at age of 50.

Some of my other personal favorites that aren’t considered in the top list are: The Cardinals “Secret Weapon” (1986-1995)Jose Oquendo, Yadier Molina, Chris Carpenter, Tommy Herr, Vince Coleman, Todd Worrell, Mike Shannon, Al Hrabosky, Adam Wainwirght, John Mabry and the list could go on and on.
Who is your all time favorite player?

Although, I’m a Cardinal fan, when it comes to great baseball players Derek Jeter of the New 455657-derek_jeter_wfw_400a053007 (1) York Yankees would have to be on the list. He is not only a great player but he is famous and beloved. Also can’t leave out A-Rod (Alex Rodriquez) also with the Yankees Players like these are why the Yankees have won 27 World Series.

Food for Thought

Did you know that Carlos Beltran is one of eight players in major league history, and the only switch-hitter, with 300 homers and 300 stolen bases?

Did you know that Pitcher Bob Gibson hit two home runs in World Series? One came during the 1967 World Series against the Red Sox and the other in the ’68 World Series against the Detroit Tigers.

Did you know that Bob Forsch is the only Cardinal pitcher to throw two-
no hitters (Against the Phillies in 1978 & Expos in 1983?

Did you know that Stan Muscial won 7 National League batting titles?

Go support your favorite baseball team this summer and if you don’t have a favorite, come and support the St. Louis Cardinals!
